So as part of an assignment I have to do research on a bass player and one of the questions I have to ask myself is who he has influenced. Are there any bass players from well established bands who have come out and cited John as an influence? I've got a few down but could do with more.

Thanks.

I interviewed The Killers in October 2004, after their show at the (miniature!) Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Both bass guitarist Mark Steurmer (I know I'm misspelling it LOL...) and singer Brandon Flowers were forthright about their love for Duran Duran in particular.

When I asked them about the inspiration behind their lyric on "On Top" that says, "Remember RIO / and get down..." and Brandon replied to the effect of "You're the first writer to actually ask me about that...! I was wondering if someone would catch on to that."

Brandon explained to me how one night, out of the clear blue, he got a phone call from someone named Paul in London who used to manage Duran Duran. A contact of his in the States told him he just "had" to listen to this unsigned band in the US who reminded him a lot of Duran before they got signed. So that was why he was calling LOL.

"Paul" was PAUL BARROWS, one of the 2 brothers who got behind Nick & John back in the early Rum Runner days!

Brandon was thrilled, because he said he loved Duran Duran's "early music". So while the young band were making their early demos, Paul and Brandon exchanged phone calls so Paul could give his opinions on how (what became) HOT FUSS was developing.

As a "THANK YOU" to Paul (who he said was NEVER a "paid" consultant, but just took genuine interest in them) - there were SEVERAL subtle "tributes" paid to him and DD on that first album by The Killers:

1- Brandon said, "Remember RIO / and get down / some foreign DJ / from some other town..." from "ON TOP" was his lyrical "THANK YOU" to Paul Barrows for his selfless guidance and friendship throughout their development...

2- Mark said his bass line on "JENNY WAS A FRIEND OF MINE" was his best imitation of John Taylor from the "Girls On Film" days - who he loved. And...

3- Brandon chimed back in that the first Duran Duran album was HIS favorite - and so he penned "JENNY WAS A FRIEND OF MINE" deliberately with "Friends Of Mine" paid obvious tribute in the song title and chorus.

I hope that helps!

Hmmmm, interesting post! Thanks for sharing, Agent!

I always thought RIO was a reference to the hotel Rio in Vegas. It seemed logical to me considering the town they formed in. They've also made reference to some other pretty well known casino/hotels around town. Cool to know I was wrong :)

It would be fun if they added some not so "mainstream" DD references and challenged us to pick up on it!

The moment I heard Jenny was instant love for me...the bass line grabbed my attention right away. I missed the "friend of mine" connection but now I have a reason to love the song even more!

I had always wondered about the Rio reference, but never would have connected Paul as the foreign DJ.

I love learning these little tidbits, especially when two of my favorite bands intersect! thanks for sharing.

What about Korn--I know the lead singer Jonathan Davis is a big fan--not sure if his bassist was influenced by JT?
